We’re so fortunate in the UK to be able to take 12 months maternity leave (or shared parental leave) and accrue holiday allowance fo that year. I’m approaching the end of my time away from my job. So what happens next for me?
I’ve decided not to go back to my job, for a number of reasons that I won’t go into here. But I suspect many new mums make a similar decision for similar reasons. Instead I’ve chosen to go back to freelancing and contracting, which I did for 6.5 years before taking my soon-to-be-former job.
While there are bits that aren’t fun about freelancing, and I have no idea how it will work with a small person to organise, it’s the freedom I’m looking forward to.
The freedom to choose projects or contracts. The freedom to decide to stop doing them. The freedom to take time back to organise my family life if I need to. The freedom to work wherever I choose – home, coworking spot, a company office, the park, a cafe….. The freedom to meet people to discuss an idea one or both of us may work on in future.
This time I’m going into it knowing there are quiet times, knowing there are frustrations, and knowing I’ll need to focus and not get distracted.
But I’m looking forward to exploring all the opportunities out there, and maybe finally working out how the things that really spark my interest and fascination in every day life can be combined with the skills and experience I bring to my working life.
